Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Seeking perchlorate source in Tewksbury |
Tests cite Billerica, Lowell waste water as perchlorate source By Bethan L. Jones Tewksbury Advocate (MA) September 22, 2004 Town and state Department of Environmental Protection officials are moving closer to discovering the source of the perchlorate in Tewksbury's drinking water, with the most recent tests indicating high levels of perchlorate coming from the Billerica waste water treatment plant. Tests taken on Sept. 7 showed 158 parts per billion entering the Concord River from the treatment plant. The Lowell waste water treatment plant showed a similar patter in the last round of testing at the end of August when water leaving the plant tested at 18 ppb. "We are working with the treatment plants ... to figure out what we need to do," said DEP deputy commissioner Ed Kunce,. The state DEP had been testing in the Concord river after the last round of tests, taken at the end of August, indicated levels of perchlorate where the Merrimack and Concord rivers meet. The Billerica waste water treatment plant showed the first appearance of perchlorate in the Concord River. Perchlorate was also found down stream at Lawrence Street and Rt.133 in Lowell at just under 10 ppb. Kunce said the findings, while helpful in giving the DEP and Tewksbury direction in testing, are "difficult and complex to resolve." ... for the entire article, see http://www2.townonline.com/tewksbury/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=89131 -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@list.cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org/mailman/listinfo/military | |
