Plan prepared for last of fuel spill ERIC STEINKOPFF Jacksonville Daily News (NC) October 1, 2004 Base officials have a plan to remove underground fuel leftover from a spill two years ago at New River Air Station. They first need public comment, however, before moving forward. Wilmington's Catlin Engineers and Scientists prepared the report for Camp Lejeune's environmental engineers, who oversee the air station, on Aug. 10. It details the extent of the spill, which leaked an undetermined amount of fuel into surrounding soil on Oct. 10, 2002. The report also details action taken to date and recommendations for the next year and a half. There is no threat to drinking water from the spill, military officials said. According to Catlin's report, the leak occurred in a tank valve at the fuel pit used to refuel aircraft. The Marines pump fuel from the Campbell Street fuel farm through underground pipes to underground tanks along the flight line. The area is similar to a racetrack pit stop for aircraft - pilots, along with air and ground crews, practice gassing up and returning to the air quickly. "(The leak) was discovered during a refueling operation, and we were able to Â? get it fixed," said Nikki Hall, a base environmental engineer.
