Wittmann residents to battle Luke air base Group feels its land is threatened David Madrid The Arizona Republic October 25, 2004 Feeling their property rights are threatened, more than 100 residents of Wittmann have decided to protect their holdings by threatening the existence of Luke Air Force Base with lawsuits and a letter-writing and telephone campaign. About 140 of the residents met in Surprise on Oct. 18, and the majority agreed that threatening the base - an economic engine that brings $1.4 billion into the state every year - would get local, county and state officials' attention. Mission accomplished. "If it comes down to losing Luke Air Force Base or losing my property, I want Luke to lose," real estate agent Charlie Harrison, who sells land in Wittmann, told the crowd. In a Luke-West Valley Council meeting Thursday, Surprise Mayor Joan Shafer, County Supervisor Max Wilson and state Rep.
