Possible perchlorate source identified
Tewksbury leaders believe Billerica firm responsible

TEWKSBURY The town's struggle to find the source of perchlorate
contamination in its drinking water may be over. 

Officials have identified a party they believe is responsible for
introducing the chemical into a local sewer system, allowing it to then
leach into the Merrimack and Concord Rivers, Town Manager David Cressman
said last night. 

Cressman declined to name the source or discuss further details, saying
the town is awaiting verification. 

Another water sample was taken yesterday to confirm the finding, and
results will be available in 24 hours, he said. Local tests have found
the highest perchlorate levels in water exiting the Billerica
waste-water treatment plant. 

Tewksbury Selectmen Chairman Joe Gill said he understands the source is
a medical company based in Billerica. He said he does not know which
company.
