Depot buyer may get cleanup bill By:Roger Alvarado Hillsborough Beacon )NJ) November 26, 2004 Township Administrator Kevin Davis says the cost of carrying out the remaining contamination cleanup at the 360-acre Belle Mead Supply Depot likely will prohibit the township from buying the property if it's put up for sale. The General Services Administration Office of Property Disposal, which owns the property, has asked acting Gov. Richard Codey to consider allowing it to find a buyer for the property before it finishes its cleanup of the site. "The process is called early transfer," William Costa said. "It's part of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) and what it does in effect is it places the responsibility of the environmental cleanup on either the GSA or the current owner." Right now the process is in a state of repose until Dec. 11 in order to allow the public to offer input on the matter, Mr. Costa said. ...
