Sprawl puts the squeeze on training ranges BY MARYANN SPOTO Newark Star-Ledger (NJ) November 29, 2004 As urban sprawl oozed beyond the Las Vegas city limits in the mid-1980s, Nellis Air Force Base, some eight miles to the north, felt the growing pains, too. Besieged with complaints about noise and concerns about accidental bombings or shootings, the training base restricted where and when pilots could fly with live ammunition. Today, there are 100 or so fewer training flights every year at Nellis, and pilots don't necessarily simulate combat conditions ecause they don't always practice at low altitudes or approach targets from varying angles, base officials said. Changes like the ones at Nellis are being felt across the country. There are more than 100 military training ranges in the United States, and many have been forced to make concessions as sprawl squeezes training areas that once operated in he middle of nowhere. ...
