Post, communities study neighborlinessBy:Patrick Donahue Hinesville Coastal Courier (GA) December 1, 2004 The first of three public meetings was held Monday at Hinesville City Hall. Another meeting was held Tuesday night in Pembroke and the final meeting will be held tonight at the Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission. The study's main topic is noise, particularly how the sound of weapons firing and other training activity on post affects its neighboring communities. "Why are concerned about incompatibility? First, it may affect the quality of life for residents in the area," Liz Drake, a planner with EDAW, said. EDAW was commissioned to examine land use and growth of the communities around Stewart and Hunter and to find ways to increase the compatibility of post operations and civilian life. "As the area grows, we may have newcomers who may not know what it means to live close to a post," Drake said. " There is also the potential of encroachment, where civilian development near a post can affect how the post conducts its business of training. "It can gradually erode the viability of the mission," she said.
