Wetlands issue gone; trails get go-aheadBy Nat Binns North Kingstown Standard Times (RI) December 2, 2004 Advertisement NORTH KINGSTOWN - Wetlands issues that could have prevented the creation of trails at Calf Pasture Point - a waterfront area in the Quonset industrial park - have been resolved, according to Brian Kent, a landscape architect designing improvements to the area. Kent, head of Brian Kent Associates, said the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) agreed to allow the town to build trails affecting 1.5 acres of wetlands if 3 acres were mitigated in another part of Calf Pasture Point. Kent said he will work with R.I. DEM to build channels to carry salt water to the wetlands in the northern part of the site. This will kill the phragmites (an invasive grass that thrives in stagnant water and crows out more beneficial grasses) covering the wetlands, and allow the more desireable vegetation to receive sunlight and reemerge, Kent said. … Cohen said the town would ask the Navy to contribute because the trails would provide access to wells the Navy must monitor for contamination. Because a Navy base existed on the site, the wells must be monitored every nine months. … For the entire article, see http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?BRD=1715&dept_id=73974&newsid=13467678&PAG=461&rfi=9 -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@list.cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org/mailman/listinfo/military | |
