Firm to Enter Purchase Bid for Whittaker The sale of contaminated property tied up in bankruptcy court; North Carolina firm also interested. Lila Campuzano The Signal (CA) December 7, 2004 An Upland-based developer is due to submit a bid today to purchase the polluted Whittaker-Bermite site near Saugus Speedway, a spokeswoman said. Details of the bid were not revealed when it was announced late Monday. Anette McCluskey, spokeswoman for Lewis-Soledad Canyon LLC, said the sales and procedure motion to purchase the property will be filed with a court in Arizona, where the property's owner has filed for bankruptcy. ... The 996-acre Whittaker Corp. Bermite site was the scene of munitions and military flare manufacturing for about 80 years. Shut down in 1987, the site was discovered to be contaminated with perchlorate, a component of rocket fuel, and some other hazardous chemicals. The perchlorate has seeped into groundwater beneath the site, forcing the closure of five wells previously used for drinking water. ... The property's owner filed for bankruptcy, and Whittaker was held financially responsible for the cleanup. The state Department of Toxic Substances Control is spearheading the effort. ...
