Well cleanup plan pushed FIXING PERCHLORATE PROBLEM TO TAKE YEARS By HongDao Nguyen Sam Jose Mercury News (CA) December 15, 2004 It will take at least 25 years to clean up wells contaminated with perchlorate in South County, but the plan moved a step closer to reality Tuesday as the Santa Clara Valley Water District board accepted it and sent it on to a regional water board. The plan calls for Olin, the company that caused the pollution, to install monitoring wells to better define the plume of pollution, halt its spread by building extraction wells to remove the perchlorate and provide affected residents with individual treatment systems. The Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board is expected to issue a formal cleanup order to Olin. The company ran a flare manufacturing plant and warehouse in Morgan Hill from 1956 to 1996 that polluted the area's groundwater with perchlorate, a chemical linked to thyroid disorders. ...
