Neighborhood on rebound By DAVID SCHWARTZ San Bernadino County Sun (CA) December 25, 2004 SAN BERNARDINO - Enrique Ramirez looks over his white, wrought-iron fence and watches his two kids ride their bikes in the street. The new Mattel distribution center is the backdrop behind his house. To the south, another giant wall is in sight, a 600,000-square foot Pep Boys distribution warehouse under construction. These behemoths boxing in his residential neighborhood don't bother Ramirez, though. "I prefer to see the buildings and the land in use," Ramirez said. "It's better than boarded-up buildings and vacant land." Ten years after Norton Air Force Base closed and became San Bernardino International Airport, the surrounding neighborhoods are changing into a landscape of warehouses and distribution centers. These neighborhoods, perhaps more than any others, felt the pain when Norton closed. The military families moved away with their steady paychecks that supported local businesses. In many cases, drugs and crime moved in. ...
