Navy says it will proceed with planning, negotiations for OLF By Estes Thompson The Associated Press Greenville Daily Reflector (NC) January 5, 2005 RALEIGH The Navy on Tuesday said it was encouraged by a federal appeals court ruling that allowed planning and property purchases for a jet landing field in eastern North Carolina, but opponents said the legal fight isn't over. The Navy and opponents of the field still must meet in federal court Jan. 19 to argue their positions and wait for the judge to make a final decision on the field. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., issued a one-sentence ruling Monday that lifted the preliminary injunction issued by U.S. District Court Judge Terrence Boyle. The order stopped all work by the Navy on the proposed Outlying Landing Field, or OLF, in Washington and Beaufort counties. Opponents of the field, including environmental groups and the governments of both counties, sued the Navy in an attempt to stop development of the field. Opponents said the OLF would endanger birds from a nearby wildlife refuge and take farm land that had been in families for generations. ...
