Air Force names cities, county in landfill suit GREG ALTUM Tullahoma News (TN) January 24, 2005 COFFEE COUNTY - Sixteen years after Coffee County, Manchester and Tullahoma stopped using Air Force property adjacent to Central High School as a landfill, the issue of paying cleanup costs is apparently going to court. The U.S. Department of Justice, "acting at the request of the United States Air Force," filed a civil suit Thursday in Federal District Court in Winchester. The United States of America is listed as the plaintiff in the suit and defendants are listed as Coffee County, the City of Manchester and City of Tullahoma. The suit states "the Air Force has spent at least $9 million to date on response actions at the landfill," and the defendants are "liable for all costs of removal or remedial action incurred by the United States." In addition to asking reimbursement for costs already incurred, the suit seeks "a declaratory judgment as to liability for costs to be incurred, to respond to releases and threatened releases of hazardous substances through response activities undertaken or funded by the Air Force at the Coffee County landfill, in Coffee County, Tennessee, which is located on the Arnold Air Force Base." ...
