Bush, Cabinet vote to preserve 2,900 acres Jacksonville Business Journal February 16, 2005 Gov. Jeb Bush and the Florida Cabinet voted Wednesday to preserve 2,982 acres of black bear habitat in Duval and Nassau counties. The land was purchased through Florida Forever, a 10-year, $3 billion program established to protect environmentally sensitive lands and restore water resources. The purchase was part of the Northeast Florida Timberlands and Watershed Reserve conservation project, a partnership between the Department of Environmental Protection and the St. Johns River Water Management District. "Our partnership with the St. Johns River Water Management District is protecting more habitat for roaming wildlife," said DEP Secretary Colleen M. Castille. "The acquisition of close to 3,000 undisturbed acres will add to a massive conservation corridor that is safeguarding black bears and bald eagles, while buffering important military installations." Targeting more than 145,000 acres across Nassau, Duval, Clay and Putnam counties, the Northeast Florida Timberlands and Watershed Reserve project protects a contiguous belt of green space stretching from the Osceola to the Ocala National Forest. ...
