Experts share ideas for bad-water study CHRIS MAZZOLINI JACKSONVILLE DAILY NEWS (NC) February 18, 2005 ATLANTA - An independent panel of seven expert scientists - from epidemiologists to toxicologists - convened Thursday for the first of a two-day deliberation about the possible need for further study of water contamination at Camp Lejeune. While no decisions were made yet, there was plenty of talk on how to make better ones in the future. That came as a great relief to the dozen or so people who attended the meeting - people from all over the country who share scars from their days at Camp Lejeune. During the all-day meeting, the panel listened to the stories of people whose lives had been impacted by the possible ill-effects of contaminated drinking water. Panelists bounced around ideas about what issues needed further examination and gave the Agency of Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) plenty of pointers on how to gain the trust and support of the affected people and communities. Some of the areas considered as focuses for further study include adult cancers and mortality, heart defects, frequency of hospital visits, neurological affects and autoimmune diseases. Richard Maas, a panel member and environmental scientist from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, said that while studying all of these issues at once would be impossible, it does not mean some good can't be gained from looking into at least some of them. "We all probably agree that to do a complete study is probably not feasible," Maas said. "This does not have to be an all or nothing. Why don't we look at some other things that we could do a pretty good job at? Perhaps we can just do as good a job as we can within the constraints that we might have. That seems a better approach than doing nothing." ...
