Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Editorial on the El Toro auction |
GUEST EDITORIAL: El Toro: It's over Auction ends long fight on high note -- sort of Orange Country Register (CA) reprinted in Desert Dispatch (CA) February 21, 2005 We suspect that a couple of years from now, when new houses and businesses and parkland have been developed at the Great Park, the Los Angeles City Council will still be lobbying the federal government to turn the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station into a major international airport. We're sure die-hard airport supporters will still be sending us letters to the editor echoing that sentiment. Some airport opponents will still be enrolled in self-help groups trying to fill that empty spot left by the end of the 12-year-long battle over El Toro. We'll be happy enough to watch Lennar Corp., the high bidder on all four parcels of the former base, begin developing the mix of housing, golf courses, commercial buildings, a sports park, infrastructure and everything else that will go into its 3,700 acres. Some new homes will be available in two years, but the housing project won't be finished until about 2015, which of course leaves plenty of time for airport supporters to keep their slim hopes alive. ...
