Kittery plans for the worst By Elizabeth Kenny Portsmouth Herald (ME/NH) February 23, 2005 KITTERY, Maine - The town has received $175,000 to prepare for the potential closure of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and with it the loss of more than 4,800 Seacoast jobs. The grant from the federal government will be used to hire a professional contractor to help set up an economic development commission in town. The commission will work to ensure that a base closure won't leave the Seacoast area devastated, according to Paul Schumacher, executive director of Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission, who applied for the grant on the town's behalf. Schumacher said the grant, available through the Office of Economic Adjustment of the Department of Defense, will be used to prepare a contingency plan before mid-May, when the Defense Department is expected to release a sweeping list of potential base closures. ...
