Officials to issue decision on waste cleanup Bryce Chapman Hazelwood-Bridgeton Journal February 23 2005 The final decision on how to proceed with the cleanup of radioactive material that for decades was stored in North County is expected in the spring, officials say. The contaminants, which include uranium, thorium and radium, were stored at properties near Lambert-St. Louis International Airport since the 1940s, when the government began a classified project to build the first atomic bomb. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the group charged with the cleanup, and the U.S. Environment Protection Agency, will release the Record of Decision. It will affect the St. Louis Airport Site (SLAPS), the Hazelwood Interim Storage Site and nearby land, labeled Vicinity Properties. "The Record of Decision lays out the process to complete the removal of radioactive material to make the property adequate for human health and the environment," said Debbie Roush, a project manager for the North County sites. ...
