Plans for Bombing Draw 150 to Hearing Avon Park Bombing Range Plans By Tom Palmer Lakeland Ledger (FL) March 2, 2005 FROSTPROOF -- The prospects of increased bombing, noise, restrictions on public recreation and threats to endangered species at Avon Park Air Force Range drew mixed reactions from 150 people who attended a public hearing Tuesday night at Frostproof High School. "Puerto Rico wanted them out of there for a reason," said Pam Richards, who, like other residents, expressed concerns about environmental damage and the danger from errant bombs. "I haven't heard anyone say it's not going to happen here." The Navy plans to increase military flights at the 106,073-acre military base southeast of here by 43 percent, from 6,974 to 9,998. The fighter-bombers would drop 13,731 practice bombs -- up from 8,394 -- and as many as 1,545 high-explosive bombs. ...
