Army Corps cleaning up contamination By JOHN JARVIS The Marion Star (OH) March 3, 2005 MARION -- Cleanup of contamination at a former military depot continues at the former campus of River Valley High School and Middle School. Other than one incident where higher than expected levels of contamination vapors were detected and required emergency attention, the cleanup is proceeding as projected. Officials are now focusing on what standards the remediation at the site will meet and what future use those standards should allow. Projected date for completion of the cleanup at the former site of the Marion Engineer Depot is in late May or early June. The Army Corps of Engineers and its contractor MWH Americas Inc. began the project in January. The cleanup follows seven years of environmental investigation, prompted after a school nurse compiled a list showing 15 cancer cases among River Valley graduates. The Ohio Department of Health concluded that studies and tests showed no conclusive links between the former school campus and an increased danger of developing cancer. But with the Concerned River Valley Families organization urging relocation, through a combination of federal, state and local funding, the district was able to relocate the senior/junior high campus from 1239 Columbus-Sandusky Road to its new home on Ohio 95, east of Ohio 98. The cleanup is to include the excavation of contaminated soil from two areas on the property, a 29,600-square-foot portion behind the schools and a 4,200-square-foot portion southwest of the larger area, according to the Corps of Engineers. ...
