Work on Rattlesnake Creek to begin By Stacey Shepard Tonawanda News (NY) March 4, 2005 Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers explained the planned cleanup of contaminated soil from Rattlesnake Creek in the Town of Tonawanda during a public meeting Thursday. But one community member used the forum to call for more testing and attention to cancer rates he believes are caused by the exposure to the toxic material dumped on Town land. Philip Sweet, a resident of the Town and community crusader for cancer victims, acknowledged the work done by the Corps in cleaning up two other portions of land near the creek, but said the Corps should direct its attention to the high rates of cancer in the Town. A study by the state Health Department found rates of cancer in parts of the Town where there is known to be radiological contamination are 12 to 81 percent higher than average. But a follow-up study by the DOH this year determined those rates were not due to exposure to nuclear materials, but instead to high rates of smoking among subjects in the study. ...
