Johnson Countians rail against zoning changes BY SARAH DANIEL THE SEDALIA DEMOCRAT March 4, 2005 KNOB NOSTER -- Angry Johnson County residents grilled a Missouri legislator during a town meeting Thursday in Knob Noster. Some 200 people attended the meeting where state Rep. David Pearce (R-Warrensburg) discussed a proposed bill to protect Whiteman Air Force Base from encroachment. Under the bill, Knob Noster would have planning and zoning authority over a 3,000-foot buffer around the base and the accident potential zone, which extends about 2 miles off the north and south ends of the runway. "I think the biggest concern, is that officials of Knob Noster will make decision without the (unincorporated) people having a vote," said Ken Nelson, a Knob Noster resident. As the Pentagon gears up to reduce its number of bases by 20 percent to 25 percent, the Whiteman Area Leadership Council is lobbying state legislators to boost WAFB's survival chances. ...
