Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Schools on Brownfields Sites - a CPEO Report |
More than 3.5 million children in this country attend derelict schools or ones needing to be replaced, and the largest proportion of these schools are located in urban centers and serve primarily minority and low-income students. For school districts needing to build new schools the central question is how to provide students with safe and nurturing schools when the only land available for new schools are sites that might be contaminated by past industrial, commercial, or agricultural activities. A new report by CPEO addresses this problem. The report, "Building Schools on Brownfields: Lessons Learned from California," written by CPEO brownfields program director, Bob Hersh, considers what safeguards are in place to ensure that schools built on brownfields are safe for children. The report examines the typical school site selection process, from the initial identification of potential sites to the selection of the preferred site, and discusses the roles school officials, parents and other community stakeholders play in this process. It considers what can be done to ensure more effective regulatory oversight and community involvement in school siting decisions. The report is being published today by the Bureau of National Affairs in its Environmental Due Diligence Guide. It can also be downloaded from CPEO's web site at: http://www.cpeo.org/pubs/BFschools.pdf. For more information about the CPEO's work on school siting or brownfields, please contact Bob Hersh at <bhersh@cpeo.org>. -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@list.cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org/mailman/listinfo/military | |
