Company hired to clean up Churchill bombsCBC News (Winnipeg) March 21, 2005 WINNIPEG - The federal government has hired a private explosive-decontamination company to remove unexploded bombs the American military left behind in Churchill. The American military operated a massive air force base in Churchill during the Cold War, but pulled out in the 1980s. Transport Canada owns and operates the airport and land where the bombs have been found. Spokesman Bill Ferguson says disposing of the bombs will cost Canadian taxpayers nearly $1 million. "The government of Canada took over the site from the U.S. military when they abandoned it," he says. "There's been agreements in place where Canada will take over the responsibility for environmental cleanup." ...
