Navy site cleanup could cost $25 millionBy Paul M. Furfari Bedford Minuteman (MA) March 24, 2005 The Restoration Advisory Board for the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant off Hartwell Road announced last week that cleanup of the contaminated site could cost up to $25 million and require 60 years until it could meet environmental standards. The board held a presentation of the technologies that could be used to clean the site and the scenarios that would result from the use of the technology. The site's risk assessment did not predict adverse effects for humans exposed to surface soil, subsurface soil, sediment or surface water, but did say there is a potential risk for contamination migration to the Hartwell Road well field of residential wells north east of the site. The plans to restore the contaminated soil to standards would restore the aquifer to drinking water quality and would prevent groundwater consumption until those drinking water standards could be met. If no actions are taken, Elizabeth Martin, a board member, said the condition of the site and the surrounding area would only grow worse. ...
