OLF raises property rights By BILL SANDIFER Washington Daily News (NC) March 28, 2005 Echoes continued to reverberate this week between North Carolina and Virginia, reflecting the sounds of a turf battle raging between the Navy and communities in both states. Issues raised in the last several weeks have moved in virtual lockstep, both in northeastern North Carolina and the Virginia Beach area. The common landscape this week has been "property rights." However, the perspective on the terrain has been decidedly different in the two regions. While Washington and Beaufort county landowners continue to worry about keeping their land -- period -- Virginia Beach landowners this week bashed the Navy -- and the City Council -- for attempting, not to take their land, but to restrict development in areas deemed troublesome to the Navy. Those areas include crash zones and tracts where potential encroachment could create further problems for Navy military installations. One landowner, despite the nettlesome climate surrounding upcoming Base Realignment and Closure announcements, called the Navy "the Beach bully," adding, "Their primary job is to protect our property rights, not to take them away." ...
