Ammo plant development moves ahead
Council vote is first of many steps

The city of Arden Hills committed itself to a metamorphosis Monday night.

Though reservations about the project remain, the City Council voted
unanimously to approve the skeleton of a plan to develop a former Army
ammunition plant that will double the tax base of the city and could
increase its population by as much as 50 percent.

The 4-0 vote ? Council Member Lois Rem was absent ? is the first
significant step in a series that will take the project from concept to
construction. With a rough sketch in place, city leaders will now set
about the task of filling in the details.

"I used to say ? that this would never happen in my lifetime," Mayor
Beverly Aplikowski said. "But it's happening, so I'm going to walk
carefully across the streets at this time."
