Opposition to OLF impacts BRAC situation, some believe Tom Bone Freedom ENC New Bern Sun Journal (NC) April 4, 2005 While the introduction of one package of legislation speaks positively of the state's commitment to the military, another has generated concern among Allies for Cherry Point's Tomorrow members, who are working to make the most positive case in the upcoming Base Realignment and Closure process for both Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and its tenant command, the Naval Air Depot. Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue last week introduced a package of benefits for military members and their families that Perdue called, "a model for sustaining the military for other states." The lieutenant governor's proposal calls for military gas tax proceeds to provide services for military families and protect bases from encroachment. It would also make it easier for military family members to obtain licenses and use community college training programs. It also would provide for the creation of a liaison between the state's military base schools and the Department of Public Instruction to work with the Military Child Education Coalition to address the unique needs and challenges faced by military children who move frequently. But, ACT president Jimmy Sanders is worried about H.B. 236, an effort by those opposed to an Outlying Landing Field in Washington and Beaufort counties to amend N.C.G.S 104-7, a 1907 law which automatically turns over jurisdiction of land purchased by the federal government, without going to the General Assembly for a grant of exclusive jurisdiction. "It's an end run to attack the OLF," Sanders said. "We have been told that the bill will not accomplish anything that the proponents desire that it accomplish, but it does all of the bad things." ...
