Ammunitions probe may delay raceway groundbreaking By JEAN JONES Bridgeton News (NJ) April 9, 2005 MILLVILLE -- The Army Corps of Engineers will schedule an investigation of possible hazardous conditions on the site of the proposed Thunderbolt Raceway at Millville Airport. If the investigation finds no hazardous conditions, development of the property will proceed. Mike Stowe, founder of the Millville Army Air Field Museum, had earlier expressed concern that part of the raceway will encroach on features of the airport he considers of historical value to the integrity of the site, such as the bore sighting facility, where aircraft guns were aligned. In March, after he had been unsuccessful in arranging a meeting with developers to discuss the possibilities, Stowe said he wrote numerous letters to various agencies expressing his concerns, not only from the historical aspect but also from a public safety perspective. Stowe said there may be unexploded ordnance on the site that should be removed before any ground is disturbed. In an April 5 response, the Army Corps of Engineers said it expects to begin development of a work plan and initiate a site inspection of the Millville FUDS (formerly used defense site) under the Military Munitions Response Program in the June 2005 timeframe, subject to agreement with the property owners to allow access. ...
