Key study on safety of chemical disputed Ingredient in rocket fuel taints many Inland water supplies By DAVID DANELSKI Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) June 3, 2005 Five years ago, a research team recruited seven people to drink water laced with tiny amounts of a rocket-fuel chemical that has contaminated many Inland drinking-water supplies. In sufficient doses, the chemical -- perchlorate -- can impair thyroid function and result in neurological impairment of fetuses and babies, metabolic disorders and other problems. The researchers, backed by a grant from the industries that make and use perchlorate, concluded that the infinitesimal amounts in their test had no effect on the healthy adults who signed on for the two-week study. ...
