Army Cleanup of Gruber's Grove Bay Failed WKOW (Madison, WI) June 22, 2005 The Army's Badger Ammo plant closed in 1975, but the water contamination is still a big problem for some people who live nearby, especially those on Gruber's Grove Bay. The Bay still has high levels of mercury, even though the Army spent $6 million in 2001 to cleanup the bay. "They did dredge it, but they didn't clean it." Says Mike Goelz, whose property is closest to the plant. "They did a terrible job." Goelz says the company contracted to do the cleanup spent most of the summer on the other side of the bay, near the Lake Wisconsin, and almost completely ignored the stretch in front of his cabin. A new study showed the highest level of mercury sediment directly in front of his property. ...
