Historic fuel dump concerning modern-day residentsCBC North August 9, 2005 Construction workers putting in water and sewer lines in Iqaluit are finding evidence of fuel contamination in the Lower Base neighbourhood. Barrels, some labelled "aviation fuel" or "fuel oil" are coming up with foul-smelling dirt as the construction progresses through that part of town. The barrels in question don't seem to contain anything but soil and water. It's likely they've been there since the 1950s, when the area was widely used as a dump by the American military. ...
