SALINA, Kan., - Federal, state and local officials were scheduled to
brief the public Tuesday night about toxic contamination found at the
former Schilling Air Force Base.

State health officials say ground samples taken at the Salina base in
2003 showed evidence of potentially harmful trichloroethylene, or TCE, a
solvent used to remove grease from metal.

Heavy concentrations of metal and jet fuel also turned up in the samplings.

Ed Lewis, the Army Corps of Engineers' Kansas City, Mo.-based project
manager for Schilling, estimated the cleanup at the former base could
cost $22 million and take as long as 30 years, Topeka radio station WIBW
reported Tuesday.
