So it won't happen again By Tracy Overstreet Grand Island Independent (NE) August 28, 2005 Anyone in northwest Grand Island impacted by the May 11 floods, anyone involved in new development and anyone concerned about pollution in storm water is being asked to attend a meeting Monday night at the Central Platte Natural Resources District office. A central piece of the meeting will be a description of a $16 million flood control project planned to provide 100-year flood protection for northwest Grand Island. The northwest area lies in the floodplains of the Upper Prairie Creek, Silver Creek and Moores Creek. ... Phase one is the development of 450 acres of water detention cells on the former Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. The NRD is expected to have most of the land purchased from the Army Corps of Engineers later this year. A small portion of the land can't be sold yet because it's not clear of contamination from when the plant was used for bomb making. ...
