Flames lick at Field Lab, stir fears of possible contamination Government officials downplay danger, say cleanup, preparedness have helped By Michelle L. Klampe Ventura County Star (CA) September 30, 2005 The Topanga fire continued to burn Thursday on portions of the 2,800-acre Santa Susana Field Laboratory near Simi Valley, damaging several buildings and raising concerns about radioactive and chemical contamination at the site. Officials from several government agencies and Boeing Co., which owns the rocket engine testing site, said that years of cleanup efforts and a scaling back of operations at the site helped lessen the fire's environmental impact. "My concern level 10 years ago would have been very high," said Greg Smith, director of hazardous materials for the Ventura County Environmental Health Department. "Today, it's much less." ...
