State Guard gears up for ordnance removalBy MARTIN J. KIDSTON Helena Independent Record (MT) October 4, 2005 Just beyond the creep of development in the North Hills, a team of ordnance technicians are working to rid a 50-year-old impact zone of unexploded rounds ranging from artillery shells to armor-piercing projectiles. In a staging area set about a half-mile from the Diamond Springs Road Impact Area, teams with the Montana Air and Army National Guard braved a cold October chill Monday gearing up for this latest round of ordnance removal. A similar process was carried out near here in 1997 when the Guard initiated a remediation project after reviewing the area's history as a firing range, one that lasted until 1960. In that sweep, according to archives, technicians removed 10 unexploded rounds lying 18 inches below the surface. ...
