Pendleton residents so far showing no signs of leadBy: DARRIN MORTENSON North County Times (CA) October 14, 2005 CAMP PENDLETON ---- Although the base is under a general warning that its tap water may be tainted with unsafe amounts of lead, none of the hundreds of Camp Pendleton residents screened so far have shown higher-than-normal levels of lead in their bloodstreams, military officials announced Thursday. Lead above the levels approved by state and federal regulatory agencies was detected in a sampling of water from housing areas in August, forcing base officials to issue an alert to base residents and workers. Officials launched a search for the source of the lead and broadened their testing to include schools, day-care centers and other facilities. Last month, base officials began providing bottled water throughout the base and offered health screenings for residents concerned about contamination. Those screenings are still available through the base hospital. ...
