RIALTO - Environmental groups and residents gathered at Rialto City Hall
on Wednesday to demand cleanup of the perchlorate contamination that has
tainted groundwater wells in the area.

Residents have signed more than 1,000 petitions calling for the Santa
Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board to require that polluters
provide replacement drinking water to affected areas, said Penny Newman,
executive director of the Glen Avon-based Center for Community Action
and Environmental Justice.

More than 20 wells in Rialto, Fontana and Colton are contaminated by an
underground plume of perchlorate, a water-soluble chemical used in
fireworks, rocket fuel and ammunition.
