Helping disarm a depot Painstaking work by Army engineers has cleared nearly 2,600 explosives from a former ordnance dump in Suffolk. BY FRED CARROLL Newport News Daily Press December 3, 2005 SUFFOLK -- The Army Corps of Engineers expects to finish sifting for discarded and burned shells at a former munitions dump in northern Suffolk by September 2008, but cleanup of chemical contamination could continue to 2011, depending on what's found in ongoing groundwater and soil tests. The cleanup matters because the 975-acre site - which includes a campus of Tidewater Community College and some businesses - could become a large warehousing and distribution hub, as well as a place for other development between the Nansemond and James rivers. The Corps of Engineers, which heads the cleanup effort, gave a tour Friday of the former depot for members of a public board monitoring the work. The military stored, recycled and dumped ammunition and artillery there from 1918 to 1960. Ordnance was often destroyed by burning it in trenches. ...
