U.S. unveils report on problems at HanfordBy Warren Cornwall Seattle Times December 7, 2005 Amid pressure from Washington state political leaders, the U.S. Department of Energy on Tuesday released a closely held report that is critical of some work at a plant being built to clean up some of the worst contamination at Hanford's former nuclear-weapons factories. But in the version released to the public, the department blacked out portions related to criticism of spending by Bechtel National, the contractor building the plant, and to contract disputes between the department and Bechtel, according to a complete copy of the report previously leaked to The Seattle Times. The redacted sections detail disagreements between Bechtel and the Department of Energy (DOE) over responsibility for higher costs to deal with fire-proofing of buildings and the buildup of explosive hydrogen gas, among other things. The department also removed sections saying the current contract may be ineffective. ...
