Army says it could leave Makua in 5 years for alternate sites Gina Mangieri KHON-TV 2 (HI) December 13, 2005 It's a military bombshell of a different kind: Makua Valley could be back under state control in five years. In an exclusive interview with the 25th Infantry's commanding general, KHON2 has learned Army developments at Schofield Barracks and on the Big Island may mean training at Makua could conclude early. Makua Valley has been a military training ground for decades. The Army has a lease with the state on the valley until the year 2029. "This is a training area that not only the Army uses," said Maj. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, commander of the 25th Infantry Division and U.S. Army Hawaii. "The Marines use it, and also the National Guard that are stationed here in Hawaii and Samoa will also use that training area if required." ...
