Introduction

Over the last several years, there has been an increasing awareness of
perchlorate in soil, groundwater, drinking water and irrigation water in
the United States. Of utmost concern are the adverse human health
effects that perchlorate may cause to individuals nationwide. This
article will briefly discuss what perchlorate is; its effects on the
human body; how it gets into our foodstuffs; recent studies showing
alarming levels of perchlorate in milk, lettuce and drinking water; and
the possibility of a new wave of environmental and toxic tort litigation
stemming from high levels of perchlorate in vital foods.
