Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Tungsten probed in Fallon (NV) Leukemia cluster. |
Tungsten probed for cancer link By AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times (MA) January 15, 2006 In a study that could have implications on Cape Cod, university researchers have found high levels of tungsten and cobalt in the air in a Nevada town where 16 children have contracted leukemia. University of Arizona scientists say the metals may be coming from emissions of a nearby hard metal facility. In a paper published this month in the journal Applied Geochemistry, they suggest the research puts them one step closer to identifying tungsten as a possible environmental cause for the deadly childhood disease. On the Cape, the Army Environmental Center has been investigating the use of tungsten-nylon bullets at Camp Edwards since the Massachusetts National Guard learned of concerns about the metal's toxicity. ...
