By Edward Colimore Philadelphia Inquirer January 18, 2006 Nobody has ever attempted this. The commander of South Jersey's newly designated "super base" must transform three vastly different defense installations with more than 22,000 military and civilian employees into one smooth, cost-effective operation. He has to take McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix and Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station, each with its own services and long traditions, and make them work together efficiently. But Air Force Col. Frederick "Rick" H. Martin, now a kind of CEO over the project, said yesterday that he's confident that the process is well under way and that the melded bases will help pave the way for the future of America's military. ...
