Colorado Springs approves buffer near Fort CarsonBy PETER ROPER THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN (CO) January 30, 2006 Wherever there are military bases, there are usually complaints from neighbors about the noise of warfare training - screaming jet engines, the heavy concussion of artillery fire, the steady pop of small arms gunnery ranges. Sometimes those complaints lead to portions of a military installation being closed and that's what Fort Carson and Colorado Springs officials have feared in recent years as Army officials have looked at the Mountain Post as an increasingly important training area, given its 200,000 acres of open terrain, plus another 250,000 acres in Pinon Canyon. So how to protect Fort Carson from urban encroachment? This month, the Greater Colorado Springs Economic Development Corp. is closing a landmark deal to help build a 1.5-mile wide buffer zone all around the post to keep residential housing, and future complaints, away from the boundary. ...
