MMR range to test bullet trap systems By AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times (MA) February 3, 2006 CAMP EDWARDS - Starting this spring, one of the firing ranges at the Massachusetts Military Reservation will be part of a national study testing bullet containment systems. The systems - called bullet traps - will be the backstop to 10 firing lanes at one of the Massachusetts National Guard's training ranges, catching and holding bullets as they whiz through and past targets. Bases around the country are testing five similar systems through a program with the National Defense Center for Environmental Excellence in Virginia. National Guard leaders have debated the idea of using bullet traps at the Upper Cape base since 1997, when the Environmental Protection Agency banned the use of lead bullets at the training facility, fearing that lead from the bullets embedded in the soil would leach into the Cape's drinking water supply. ...
