Is mercury move safe for Hillsboro? Nevada fighting stockpile move. By PAMELA SROKA Bridgewater Courier News (NJ) February 4, 2006 HILLSBOROUGH -- Safety concerns have been raised by an environmental group on the day federal officials announced about 2,883 tons of mercury would be removed from the Somerville National Defense Stockpile Depot, locally known as the GSA Depot, on Route 206. Meanwhile, Nevada's governor said he'll fight any plans to move the stockpile to his state. In a news conference Friday at the facility, township and federal officials announced the mercury would be transported to an Army depot in Nevada within 18 months. The depot houses about 60 percent of the nation's stockpile of mercury, Hillsborough Mayor Carl Suraci said. In Nevada, Gov. Kenny Guinn said he'll fight a plan that would ship in more than 4,400 metric tons of toxic mercury stored in four states, including the GSA Depot. ...
