Oil giant blames old defense agency for S. Phila. slickBy DAVE DAVIES Philadelphia Inquirer February 7, 2006 THE U.S. government has sued Sunoco to pay for the cleanup of a 2 million-gallon oil slick oozing through the water table beneath 56 acres of South Philadelphia. Since the gunk was discovered 15 to 20 feet below the surface 15 years ago, it has wiped out a 700-unit public-housing project and prompted a cleanup that began 10 years ago and still has many years to go. Neighbors have long blamed the nearby Sunoco refinery for the mess, which could be penetrating down to an aquifer that extends into New Jersey. Public officials say the oil plume poses no immediate health risks, but community activists think it's a factor in higher-than-normal cancer rates. ...
