Study targets liver cancer deaths Jerry Needham San Antonio Express-News (TX) February 10, 2006 The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District launched a study Thursday aimed at determining if environmental contamination from the former Kelly AFB has played a role in excessive liver cancer deaths in ZIP codes around the facility. Health Care Resolution Services Inc., a Maryland firm selected after a request for proposals was issued last October, will conduct the six-month study, said Fernando Guerra, district health director. About 40 people showed up for a public meeting at Brentwood Middle School on Thursday night in response to 23,000 letters the health department sent out to get public input into the study. Tim Aldrich, an epidemiologist who is a professor at East Tennessee State University, will lead the $20,000 study. The Air Force Real Property Agency, which is overseeing the cleanup of pollution at and around the former base, which closed in 2001, is paying for the study. ...
