State's tungsten testing promising By AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times (MA) February 25, 2006 CAMP EDWARDS - The Cape's largest source of drinking water may have dodged a bullet, according to preliminary testing by state regulators. Department of Environmental Protection tests have found no tungsten in six wells at Camp Edwards, including two Upper Cape water supply wells. Gov. Mitt Romney called for the tests last week after the Army found 15 parts per billion of tungsten in groundwater under the base, which is the Upper Cape's primary source of drinking water. Tungsten contamination at Camp Edwards is the result of a switch to tungsten-nylon bullets from lead rounds in 1999. The use of lead bullets at the base was banned due to fears that lead, which is toxic for humans, could leach into the aquifer underneath the military facility. When they were introduced seven years ago, the tungsten bullets were not expected to leach into the aquifer. ...
